Earwax from inside your ear and dirt from outside can both damage your hearing aid and keep it from working properly. Over time, if you’re not keeping your hearing aids clean, then the grime can get inside the unit and begin to gum up the works and you’ll soon find yourself without a working hearing aid. Fortunately, keeping your hearing aids clean is relatively easy.
On a daily basis, you should be wiping your hearing aids down with a soft dry cloth. Keep in mind that things like water, alcohol, or other cleaning solutions can damage your hearing aids, so avoid using these. When you can see earwax or other grime on your hearing aid, use the cleaning tools you got with your hearing aids and follow the instructions for your specific aids to remove any buildup.
- Keep them Safe
If you drop your hearing aids onto a hard surface from more than an inch or so, you can damage the internal structure when prevents them from working properly. To enhance your hearing aid’s performance, be sure to avoid dropping them when you’re removing them or putting them in. When you are first learning these, it’s best to do so while seated on the bed with a pillow in your lap.
- Store them Properly
Another common cause of internal damage to hearing aids is improper storage methods. When storing your hearing aids at night, keep them as far away from heat and moisture as you can. You may even consider using a special dehumidifying box that will keep the air around your hearing aids dry. This keeps tiny bits of moisture from building up and damaging the internal circuitry.
- Maintain Battery Life
There are a few things that you can do to maintain battery life for your hearing aids, which will help to enhance their performance since a low battery is often the primary cause for failures in hearing aids. When not using your hearing aids, be sure to turn them off. When you store them at night, it also helps your battery life to leave the battery door open.
- Keep them Dry
Although newer hearing aids are made for better water resistance than previous models, they’re not completely waterproof. To enhance your hearing aid performance, be sure to take them out before you go swimming, take a shower, or sit in a sauna. You should also wait to put them in if using a hair dryer or any spray products near your face or in your hair.
If you do make a mistake and get your hearing aids wet on accident, then don’t panic. If you act quickly, you can usually save them with a small amount of work. Remove them as soon as possible, open the battery compartment and pull out the battery, then gently shake them to get as much water out as you can. Then, place them in a warm area with good airflow to help them dry out quickly.
By following these simple steps, you can help to enhance your hearing aid performance so you can hear better for longer. By taking care of your hearing aids, they will last longer and work better for you.
